Starting your Own Blog: Finding a Good Host.
Are you thinking of starting a WordPress Blog? Congratulations on the choice. I have tried many platforms of content management systems including Joomla, Blogger, Plone and finally WordPress. I feel WordPress not only the most user friendly in terms of minimal aggrevation and interface, but also very powerful in terms of the ability to modify the underlying code and CSS files without too much trouble.
You can start a free blog with WordPress Hosting with a URL that would look like
http://yourblogname.wordpress.com/
This is a great way to start, but if you are serious about it, I’d suggest getting your own domain name and hosting.
THen your WordPress Blog will look like this or something very similar:
http://www.yourdomainname.com/
There are scores of hosts and domain name registrars, but I’d suggest trying out Lunar Pages. I have been with them for several years now on another blog that gets between 50 & 100 posts a day. Lunar Pages has an automatic installation packing called “Fantastico” that is basically point and click install of some intricate software including WordPress.
For the past 4 domains that I have put up, I had a registered domain name and content up on the web within about 15 minutes of pressing the purchase button for the domain name, no joke. If you are registering for the first time with LunarPages, it might take a little longer, but I doubt it. They are very efficient and have great customer service.
Some of the benefits of Lunar Page hosting, straight from their website:
Basic Hosting for $6.95 a month
- 350 GB Storage
- 3500 GB Bandwidth
- Free Domain Name for Life!
- $700 CoffeeCup Software FREE
- 10 Add-On Domains Included
I can add on the reasons that I chose them, which included Linux Server Support, PHP, 99 MySQL databases (MySQL Database support is required for wordpress, Joomla & other content management systems, not to mention doing your own experimentation in programming. Note that you also get one free domain name for life and 10 add on domains. The add-on domains are huge. Many bloggers get ‘hooked’ on the idea of setting up websites on their own domains. With Lunar Pages you can have up to 10 additional domains hosted on your single Lunar Pages Account for no additional charge!
I have downloaded the entire CoffeeCup software package, and while I might not be willing to pay for the products retail, since they are included in the hosting, I find myself using them regularly, especially the FTP and “LockBox” programs. There are about 20 software products in total that you can download from Coffee Cup once you are a Lunar Pages Customer.
