I've always been encouraged to link page to page and to also get links to inner pages as well. In practice I have a tendency to link to the main page anyway simply because I forget to do anything else. Lastly I would like to second your comments about Stompernet. I was a student for a few months. They've got it going on. Quite an intelligent group without their SEO noses in the air. Check them out for SEO facts and education.
